The basic foundation breeds of dairy cows are- Holstein, Jersey, Brown Swiss, Ayshire, Shorthorn & Guernsey.

With no saying how you can mix or match these breeds, although there are some out there who encourage purist, often it has been found that by crossing breeds you can produce a hybrid cow, that helps fertility & components of a cows milk.
